January 8, Friday: SCCRS General Meeting, 7:30 P.M.

Program: Pruning Demonstration and Rose Auction

Unsure about how to prune your roses? This is the meeting you've been waiting for. Learn from our ARS Consulting Rosarians as they demonstrate how to prune. Bring your questions, gloves, and rose shears. Free to the public.
 
After the pruning demonstration, we will hold our Annual Rose Auction. Fill your garden with bargains from this popular event. Bring your already pruned roses and wrap them in a plastic garbage bag so we can keep the floor clean. Be sure to attach a label with the name and type of rose.

Learn about everyone's favorite rose tools. Bring one or more favorite rose tools you love to use such as clippers, hat, gloves, whatever. Share, show, and tell everyone about them, demonstrate how to use them, where you bought them, and why you love them. Free to the public

Wondering about which fertilizers to use on your roses. Barbara Gordon will discuss many aspects of fertilizing your roses.
Barbara Gordon is an American Rose Society (ARS) Horticultural Rose Judge, Consulting Rosarian,
and Rose Arrangement Judge. Free to the public.

April 8, Friday: SCCRS General Meeting, 7:30 P.M

Program: Non-toxic Rose Growing

Steve and Diana Steps will explore environmentally friendly ways to grow roses, and control rose pests.
Learn the differences between "organic" and "non-toxic" methods of growing roses.
This program includes a fun overview of integrated pest management.
Free to the public.

Steve and Diana Steps are both Master Rosarians, have taught at eleven Consulting Rosarian schools,
and hosted two CR schools. They have given dozens of presentations to local societies, the NCNH District,
three ARS national conventions, and a World Federation of Rose Societies convention. They also re-wrote the
"Soils & Water" and "Fertilizers" chapters, and wrote the "Pest Control Basics" (IPM) chapter of the Consulting Rosarian Manual, 2nd Edition.
Steve Steps served as our SCCRS 1995-96 President. Diana Steps served as our SCCRS 1999-2000 President.

Program: Highlights from the 2015 World Federation of Rose Societies Conference

In 25 May - 01 June 2015, the World Federation of Rose Societies (WFRS) held their 17th World Convention of Rose Societies at Lyon, France.
We are honored to have former American Rose Society President, Jolene Adams, present a lively talk about attending the conference.

Jolene fell in love with roses as a teenager and hasn't gotten over it. Jolene grows over 150 roses of all types -
Climbers, OGRs, Minis and Minifloras, Hybrid Teas, Grandifloras, Floribundas, Polyanthas, Austins, Romanticas, Modern and Classic Shrubs.
She lectures widely on computing issues, general gardening topics, and on roses. Jolene became ARS President at the Fall 2012 ARS Convention.

Barbara Gordon will present a talk on many aspects of growing miniature roses.

On September 2, 2016, Tom Carruth presented a talk about "Breeding Fragrance in Roses"
to the East Bay Rose Society. Many of you were unable to attend.
John filmed the talk which we will present at our meeting.

Tom Carruth is an internationally recognized and truly eminent authority on rose breeding.
He is currently curator of the rose collections at the Huntington Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California.
